"DR. QUIMBY'S DISCOURSE"
ON HEAVEN &
THE KINGDOM OF HEAVEN
When I sit down by a patient,
their thought is their wisdom
(or opinions)
and to me
there is no light in them.
My light
(or wisdom)
sees
through their darkness
(or belief)
and I,
knowing that
their
sufferings
are the effect of
this world's wisdom,
take them by the hand
and guide
them by my light
till I raise them from the dead
(or error)
into the light of science
(or
heaven).
Heaven is to bring him
back to
the knowledge of himself.
This is
my heaven.
Love is an element of itself
without any form;
it has no length nor breadth,
nor height or depth;
it neither comes nor goes;
it fills all space
and melts all error down
that comes within its
power.
Its power is its heat,
its heat is its love,
it is heaven.
To know whether you are born of
the truth,
the truth shall show just your
position in the world.
Then you can take the lead and
the world will listen to you.
Then the kingdom of this world
has become subject
to the kingdom of heaven,
for error has become the subject
of truth.
When Jesus heard John's thought
(or was baptised),
as he came from the water (or
understood his ideas),
the heavens (or truth) was
opened unto him
and its voice
descending from God (or
Science), said,
"This truth is the Son of God
(or
Science)."
The natural man never can
understand
the things of the spirit
and all these are governed (or
created)
in the heavens (or spiritual
world),
and this spiritual world is
science.
To introduce a science
that can explain the errors that
keep us in trouble
is what prophets foretold
and wise men have looked for
ever since the world began.
This knowledge has been called
by various names.
It was called the New Jerusalem
that came down from heaven
and it was called the kingdom of
heaven.
This is the law that was written
in the hearts;
it is the knowledge of ourselves
that can see the evils of our
own misery.
He, that is, Jesus,
would give Peter the keys (or
explanation)
so that he could understand and
practice it
for the benefit of mankind.
This knowledge would give him
power
to loose those who were bound in
heaven
or in the mind
and loose those bound in their
earthly body.
The religious people of Jesus'
day
like the Christians of
this day
made heaven and hell places
independent of man,
and although some may deny it,
their acts give the lie to their
professions.
He had no heaven or hell out of
man,
no happiness or misery outside
of us.
His God was in Him and us...
For He said,
"Not all those who say, Lord,
Lord,
shall enter into the Kingdom of
Heaven
or Science";
not those who say,
"I understand it,"
but those
who put it into practice
so
that the world shall be the wiser for the knowledge.
Now put man intelligently in
possession of the idea
that scientific knowledge
can produce a change in the
system
scientifically
so that it increases man's
happiness -
then you establish the kingdom
of heaven
(or happiness)
in this world of ignorance.
This is the
science to be taught.
All the parables that Jesus made
were to establish the kingdom of
heaven
(or God's science) in this world
of man's mind.
This science was to put man in
possession
of a knowledge superior to
the natural man,
so to the natural man it was a
mystery.
They could not understand
how there could be
any power
which could
see
the workings
in the natural man's thoughts.
So to establish this was not an
easy task.
Now the idea
of Jesus' ideas
was a new heaven (or wisdom)
and a new earth (or belief).
The new heaven,
under the direction
of the wisdom of God
(or science),
could create a new belief
wherein could be peace and
happiness
that the old heaven (or wisdom)
knew nothing of -
where there should be peace and
power
in the Holy Ghost (or
explanation)
of this new world -
where no errors
nor selfishness
nor strife
could dwell,
so that all ignorance
and superstition
should be cast out
into outer darkness
never to return.
So he traveled all through the
land
preaching the kingdom of heaven
and curing all kinds of
diseases,
and his fame went through all
the land
and great multitudes followed
him.
And he went up into the higher
state -
into the
science
and opened his mouth to them
in truth (or parables).
I will give you the key to
heaven (or science)
as far as correcting the errors
in regard to your health is concerned
so that you cannot be deceived
by the errors of the world.
But the wise were ignorant of
the cause of their own wisdom,
so that in trying to make people
understand this truth
which he called the greatest of
sciences
(or the kingdom of heaven)
he spoke in parables.
So when he was asked for an
explanation
of his science (or power) (or
kingdom),
he took a little child in
his arms
and said,
"Of such is the foundation
or kingdom of heaven."
Now everyone knows that a child
is a blank
as far as virtue or vice is
concerned
and with it might is
right.
Now the growth of this child's
wisdom
depends entirely on the
direction
given to its mind.
Then he says,
What shall I compare its little
wisdom to?
I will compare it to a grain of
mustard seed
that a man sowed in his garden.
So God sowed wisdom
in this little child's mind
and this wisdom,
if properly developed,
would teach him that his body,
like the earth,
was the casket or loom
for this wisdom to develop
itself in.
It is like this:
that the other world
is only a state of mind
and that Jesus never intended
to teach the resurrection of the
body
and that heaven
is not a place
but a state of mind
that will follow us
after death.
This is that pure soil
that has gone through all the
changes of life
from the mineral kingdom
to the spiritual (or scientific)
world,
or the kingdom of heaven,
where God
(or science)
is.
Then will arise a new heaven (or
science)
and a new earth (or man)
free from disease (or error),
for his old world (or belief)
shall be burnt up
with the fire of science,
and the new heaven (or science)
shall arise,
wherein shall not be found
all these old superstitions,
bigotry and disease -
but where there is no more death
nor sighing from some ache or
pain
which arises from superstitions
of the old world.
I can sum up the religion of
this world
and the religion of Jesus
in one simple parable.
So Jesus wanted to show the
people
by a parable
what was wanted to get a person
into the right state of mind
to receive the kingdom of heaven
(or science).
Everyone knows it is harder to
unlearn an error
than to learn a truth.
So Jesus, knowing that a child
was free from both,
took him as a parable
so that the Christian world must
give away
(or get rid of) all their errors
and become as a little child
to receive the Holy Ghost (or
Science).
This was the new birth;
therefore to enter into Science
(or the kingdom of heaven)
was not a very easy thing.
All the world's superstition and
wisdom
was based on an opinion,
and to meet it was to
spiritualize everyone of their ideas.
They believed in a literal
heaven -
to this he gave a spiritual
meaning,
saying his heaven was not of
this world of opinions
but of science,
and he would bring it down to
man's understanding.
They created a God
after their own heart (or
wisdom)
and set Him in the heaven of
their own belief.
Jesus had to establish a kingdom
as the priests had done:
theirs was based on opinions -
his on science -
so everything that they believed
was only an opinion
which his science could tear
to pieces.
So he begins by saying,
"Seek first the Kingdom of
Heaven"
- that is, seek wisdom (or
science) -
then all their craft could be
explained.
Then he says,
"The kingdom of Heaven has come
unto you
and ye will not receive it"
- that is, the science is here
but you will not try to
understand it.
In the Old Testament
David called this science Wisdom
and exhorted his son to seek it
first of all.
Jesus called it the Kingdom of
Heaven
and calls on all men to seek it.
If this Wisdom and the Kingdom
of Heaven
were not the same,
then Jesus and David
had different ideas of wisdom.
To gain the Kingdom of Heaven is
to gain Science.
All facts go to show that man
believes in a heaven and hell.
It is true some undertake to
deny one and establish the other.
The liberal Christians pretend
to believe in heaven
and disbelieve in a hell -
but this is as absurd as the
other -
for if the Bible teaches one,
it does the other.
Every act of the liberal
churches shows
that if they act in obedience to
a belief in heaven,
the same belief
makes them act to keep from hell.
As I have said,
if one is right so is the other,
and whoever believes in one
believes in the other.
The same book that teaches
heaven teaches also hell.
All their Gods and Devils,
their heaven and hell
are humbug to me.
Their religion arises
from the fear
of their belief.
Let the word "kingdom" represent
happiness
arising from wisdom,
or misery arising from a
belief,
and then it follows
that his wisdom
was to make men happy -
or to establish the kingdom of
heaven within them -
while their belief made the
kingdom of darkness
wherein men were sick and wicked.
As I understand the religion of
Jesus,
it sweeps away all religious
beliefs and opinions
and leaves man to act on
scientific principles of truth.
It takes away belief
and in its place substitutes
knowledge of good and evil.
He disbelieved in death,
in heaven
and hell.
With Jesus
the kingdom of heaven
is the effect of wisdom,
and to enter into it,
man must do
something
that
is contained in wisdom.
Yet Christ was in Jesus
and through him entered the
world of opinions
to reconcile the opinions to
truth
and to establish the kingdom of
heaven
in man's mind
as a science.
If Jesus knew how he cured,
then the kingdom of heaven
had come to their understanding;
but if he did not,
then he was just as ignorant as
they were,
and the world was none the wiser
for his cures.
Then every theory of man
based on an opinion
shall fall
and the Son of God (or Science)
shall reign on the earth
as it does in heaven;
Then there will be a new heaven
(or science)
and a new earth (or belief) -
for the old theory of opinions
shall be burned up by Science.
God is not of the earthly
but of the heavenly (or higher)
intelligence
called "Science."
Jesus answered this question of
where heaven is
by saying it is in you -
even
in your thoughts.
So the kingdom of heaven
was in their minds.
Now this is my belief.
So it is with the other
world -
it is all in the mind.
Now get it out
so that the mind does not
contain it -
then what exists?
You exist -
and that you know
if you know anything.
What does Jesus mean by the
Kingdom of Heaven?
We all know the common opinion
was that heaven was a place.
Now some suppose it to be a
state of mind.
Had Jesus either of these ideas?
I say he did not,
and will show what his ideas
were.
Now what was the idea the world
had of heaven?
People never had such an idea
as the Christians have now.
They never believed in any other
world,
but their suffering was their
evil
and to be cured was their heaven
(or happiness).
As science is spiritual,
it must be explained by literal
things.
So he used parables
to show how this truth grows in
the minds,
for he makes the mind matter
and sows the seeds of wisdom
in the mind.
So he takes, for example,
a little child
before its mind is filled
with the errors of priest,
as a figure of heaven.
Not that the mind contains any
wisdom,
but like the soil of the earth
it is pure from foul seeds( or
error),
ready to receive the true seed
of wisdom,
guided by a higher development
than the priest.
He says,
"Of such is the kingdom of
heaven" -
that this truth could live and
grow in the child.
Not that the heaven or kingdom
was happiness,
but the happiness
was in the one
that got into it.
Now the love for wisdom prompts
him to learn,
and as he learns his happiness
is full.
This is entering into
heaven.
This is the heaven that God has
prepared for everyone
who will try to learn,
and if everyone
will search for God (or Wisdom),
God will not cast him off.
We are taught our belief is one
thing
and our health another.
But it is not so.
Man's belief is his heaven or
his hell.
You may not be aware of the
effect of your belief.
Peter is the science that holds
the keys (or theory).
All that are loosed on earth by
this truth
are loosed in heaven (or in
their
belief).
To preach Christ
is
to put heaven in practice,
to liberate the poor and
sick
who have been bound by the false
ideas of the world.
I know of no other world
than that which Jesus set up in
man's heart -
which meant the mind.
The old world (or beliefs) are
passed away
and a new belief (or heaven) is
set up in the hearts of men,
where all beliefs shall be
tested by science
and the wicked (or error) shall
be
destroyed.
Now establish the true
philosophy
(or goodness and happiness)
and then you have a heaven on
earth.
Then Jesus' words will come to
pass when he says,
"I will create a new heaven (or
philosophy)
and a new earth (or matter)
where there shall not be any
darkness
but all will be light.
Now this is the new heaven (or
philosophy)
that was foretold in the days of
the wise men
and repeated by Jesus 1800
years ago.
God is represented as all
wisdom
and love.
Now love is not wisdom
but a desire for wisdom;
therefore,
a desire to get wisdom
for the sake of happiness that
follows
is the highest love.
This
is heaven
and to be deprived of this love
is to be out of heaven.
The sick are strangers to this
heaven.
It is true they have a sort of
love
but it is governed by a false
love or wisdom.
It is the light or wisdom of
man.
This leads to death
but to have the true love or
desire
that leads to wisdom,
this
is heaven.
If you believe this
Wisdom is superior to opinions
and that opinions are nothing but error
that man has embraced, then when you come in contact with a person
"diseased,"
your wisdom will throw the mantle of charity over their
errors,
if it is for the restoration of their health.
But if the
repugnance arises
from some unknown cause,
examine yourself
and see if
the fault
lies at your own door.
If not,
you may be sure
it is some
false opinion
in the person
that troubles him.
So to overcome their
evil (or error),
pour on coals from the fire of love (or charity)
in
the form of right reason,
till you melt down the image of brass
that is
set up in their minds.
And they will leave their errors
and embrace
the truth.
This is heaven.
Although
the partition (or veil)
hides your form from me,
yet my spiritual wisdom can
commune with you
as much as it would if I
were in your presence
and you were blind.
I should know you, but you could
not tell
unless I made myself known to
your natural senses.
Yet I know it so from all that I
have seen and felt.
I know that man begins at his
birth
to develop this life (or
science)
and his body, like langauge,
is a medium for him to
communicate through
till a higher life (or
scientific
man) comes forth.
Then a new heaven and a new
earth is formed
and man lives in both
but does
not always know it.
To know this
so as to put
it into practice
is reducing
this wisdom to a
science.
