"DR. QUIMBY'S DISCOURSE"

LOVE

§
I believe that our minds
are under some Wisdom
for a love
the natural man
is unaware....

§
What is the strongest feeling in man or woman?
Love for the sake of love for others.

For this love they will lay down their lives
when directed by knowledge -
for no passion can follow true love.

Love contains no fear.

Ignorance puts a false construction on love.
Here lies all the trouble.

Love and Ignorance
are the mother and father
of all error (or disease).

Now to know ourselves
is to know the truth of this problem.

§
Love is an element of itself
without any form...
it has no length nor breadth...
nor height or depth...
it neither comes nor goes...
it fills all space -
and melts all error down
that comes within its power.

Its power is its heat -
its heat is its love.
It is heaven.

For this love
Christ laid down all his animal life
(or passions)
for mankind
that they might understand themselves
and be saved
from the endless hell
(or misery)
that follows our ignorance
of this power
(or love).

On these two powers
- Love and Ignorance -
hang all the Law and the Gospels.

The gospel is love -
the law is error.
Therefore when you are under the law -
you become subject to the laws and penalties.

When you are free from the law,
it has no power over you.

This Law of Love
is that Love in mankind
that is working in us
(or error)
to bring us to truth
and set us free
from the law of sin
(or death).

The Laws of Love
are the destruction of the laws of error -
and they make us a law to ourselves.

This Law of Love
has no penalties or prisons -
but like the bird that flies in the sky
is not troubled with earthly laws -
but is a law to itself.

Love is a substance
like food
that comes from heaven
to feed the soul.

Love is the true answer to our desire....
In our desire is our hope -
and when we get that which we hope for
it contains nothing but true knowledge
(or love) -
no sorrow... nor pain...
nor grief... nor shame...
nor fear.

The identity of woman's soul
can be compared to a fire
which throws an equal heat
on all around.

This heat is pure love -
containing no knowledge...
no selfishness...
but is like the love
of a mother to her child.

This love is little understood
and causes doubts and questionings.

It is an element of itself,
containing no matter
and asks nothing in return.

Ignorance and superstition
put false constructions on this love
and think intelligence is contained in it.

Its language is itself.

It speaks not as man speaks -
for it contains no error.

It answers our inquiry
by an impression
which cannot be misunderstood -
if man knows himself.

This love is what leads man to truth.

§
As error contains selfishness...
dishonesty...
jealousy...
and disease -
it cannot see truth
(or love)
in any element
differing from its own.

It therefore judges others
by its own standard.

This element -
when excited by love
to lead us to truth -
contains all kinds
of disease and error...
and all mankind
embrace both elements...
and the separation
is the resurrection
from error unto truth.

As we learn the Truth -
we discard the error.

True knowledge is in true love.

§
Then you will be loved and respected
for your love (or knowledge) -
and you will draw around you
those minds
that are in harmony
with yours.

The people will see that
God never bound anyone
- only by love for one another -
and this love
knows no ill-will
towards its neighbor.

§
God does not act at all -
but is like the heat (or fire)
that throws heat (or fire)
on all around.

Those who will come
can enjoy the heat
(or love) -
but if we choose
to stand out in the cold,
we cannot expect exclusive privileges -
for He has no respect to one over another.

§
If I act rightly
I get my reward -
for our happiness or misery
is in our acts...
and as we are a part of each other,
our happiness is in our neighbor -
and to love our neighbor
as ourselves
is more than all
burnt offerings
and sacrifices.

§
What is the element that receives all sensation?
Love for ourselves.

§
  Jesus' sea was love
for the sake of the world's happiness.

This love he laid down
for the sins (or beliefs) of man
and received into the bosom
of this love
(or sympathy)
which was pure -
not a selfish idea
independent of all -
but a love
for the sake of all.

Now this Christ
is in this element
of love
(or sympathy)
that contains no error -
but is pure love
that will wash away all error
that chances to get into it.

Its happiness
is the developing of God's love
(or science).

§
I will give you a description of the God I worship:

He has no respect for persons.
He is a God of love and truth.

§
Religion belongs to
the man of opinions who
- not knowing God -
worships something
he is afraid of.

While the Scientific Man
worships God in wisdom
and sees nothing but
love and harmony -
and His love
(or wisdom)
casteth out fear -
for fear hath torment.

§
To do good
because you feel better -
then you act from love
and not from fear.

  So to overcome their evil
(or error) -
pour on coals
from the
fire of love
(or charity)
in the form of
"right reason"
till you melt down
the image of brass
that is set up in their minds -
and they will leave their errors
and embrace the truth.

§
Fear is the beginning of wisdom -
for if there were no fear -
there would be no development of wisdom.

So fear worketh out wisdom...
Wisdom worketh out love...
and love casteth out fear.

God is represented as all Wisdom and Love.

Now love is not wisdom,
but a desire for Wisdom -
therefore, a desire to get Wisdom
for the sake of happiness that follows
is the highest love.

This is heaven -
and to be deprived
of this love
is to be
"out of heaven."

The sick are strangers to this heaven.

It is true
they have a sort of love...
but it is governed by
a false love
(or wisdom).

It is the light
(or wisdom)
of man.

This leads to death -
but to have the true love
(or desire)
that leads to Wisdom -
this is heaven.

§
The man that is little above the brute
knows no love superior
or separate from
the brute -
while there is a love
that does not contain
a particle of the animal -
the love of the beautiful and wise.

The mistake lies in the false idea of love.

Man
- being progressive -
is not always to remain a brute.

His reason
must elevate him
from the brutal element
and lead him
to see and feel
that the purest love
that one can have for another
contains no passion -
nor any of the brutal element.

But man began to reason
before he came out from the brute -
and judged the world by his own standard.

Therefore to the impure nothing is pure -
but those who have passed
from the error of matter
to the element of love
- in which everything lives -
can see how it may be
misrepresented.

§
Remember that
"Love casteth out fear,"
and fear hath torment.

Science is Love.
